The earliest iterations of ketogenic and similar diets date back all the way to BC [2] when the medical authorities of the day would use specific types of diets in order to treat epilepsy. The idea that a diet could help with a mental condition such as epilepsy may appear a little absurd but you probably did not know that these types of methods for treating epilepsy stuck around until the early 19th century.

Around the s doctors uncovered that they could use the ketogenic diet more or less the way we know the ketogenic diet to be today to treat epilepsy. A disorder in which nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed. Your average keto diets will be a little more stringent though as the majority of them stipulate that you ought to intake only 30 to 50 grams of carbohydrates. The belief is that the body will actually shed more pounds if it burns off fat for fuel as opposed to carbohydrates. The point at which your body is apt to burn use fat as opposed to carbohydrates for energy is called ketosiswhich is where the ketogenic gets its name.

It is the goal of every ketogenic dieter to get their body into a continuing state of ketosis every day, but this is not easy always. That is why there are different types of specific diets that fall under the umbrella term of ketogenic diets but have slight variations. What are the Types of Keto Diet? One of the most amazing things about the keto diet is that it has been tested in studies to treat children who have seizures [4]. The Ketogenic Diet to Fight Cancer – Some studies have indicated that ketosis essentially starves some types of cancer.

Some cancers spread through metabolization and these types cannot spread through ketones and therefore have no energy [5]. It is said that fat is a far more efficient kind of fuel and it can lead to a higher output of energy. Ketogenic Diet for Weight Loss and Disease – The main purpose of the modern ketogenic diet is to lose weight. It may be a superior diet for weight loss since the body is forced to use fat rather than carbs for energy. When fat can be used for energy it goes away.

This can also positively effect the blood sugar levels of individuals with type-2 diabetes [6] Monitor blood sugar levels to regulate them. Again the great fear and confusion between ketosis and acido-ketosis. There is absolutely no common measure between both. Never will you get acido-ketosis on a LCHF diet but if youre type 1 diabetic and do not have insulin, you will die very quickly from acido-ketosis.

Take all the unprocessed food out and eat clean, eliminate sugar, eat moderate meat fish (omega 3), lots of vegetables (super low carbs), and good fats, fruits from time to time. if this way of eating is called keto. then, sign me in. There is the right way to do keto and the wrong way (cheese, bacon, and eggs 24/7) she is talking about dirty keto. I eat lots ( 8-9 cups) of vegetables a day, grass-fed, cage-free meat and lots of healthy fATS (olive oil, avocado oil, nuts) do not try to tell me, I am eating unhealthy, she wants us to eat heavily-processed food like bread and pasta? no, thank you. I did low-fat diets and I did the keto diet. I had great results with both. Keto and IF had great results. The problem is maintenance since I would always put back on the pounds when getting back to my terrible diet (with Doritos). Those diets are not sustainable for a long time. Keto is a bit easier for me as a diet than low fat, but restricting carbs to 5-10% is just not a happy place to be for a long time for me. I am sticking now to a low carb diet as a way of life – Keto + more complex carbs and intermittent fasting. Cheat meals once or twice a month. Its more sustainable.

I had a grandfather who was born on the island of Ikaria, one of the blue zones, and still have relatives living there. It would say it is not so much a difference in the things that they consume which contribute to their health and longevity. They eat everything that every expert on every different diet ever said was bad for you. They eat high carb, high fat, high protein, deep fried foods, pastries and candies, etc. Not only do they eat all the wrong foods, but they also dont exercise, stay up late, party and get drunk, smoke cigarettes, drink coffee, and so on.

I had a great-uncle who died last year at the age of 101. He was running around doing everything he always did right up to the end. The major factor in their longevity and vitality, in my opinion, is lack of concept of time. When I visited there many years ago, I remember that when you asked anyone for the time, you never got an answer in terms of hours and minutes. It was always time for lunch or time for a nap or time for coffee. There was no awareness of the time in terms of the clock. No sense of time constraint or pressure to do anything. Of course, we cannot deny the beneficial effects of living on a sun drenched pollution and crime free island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea..

Its always hilarious to me how these experts talk about keto as though its simply a hack. Because the underlying assumption then has to be that humans–and pre-human species–have always had an abundance of carbohydrates–which is, of course, too stupid an opinion to even comment on. None of these dietician people ever take into consideration our human evolution on this planet and the fact that for very long stretches of time–millions of years–ketosis was the only thing that kept the human evolutionary line from dying out. Yet, its just a hack. Ridiculous.

@John Linnon Firstly, if you think fats clog arteries, then youre just as gullible as Ancel Keys and his cohorts from 60 years ago. Secondly, if youre doing keto correctly, youre only eating clean fats, lots of vegetables, and small amounts of protein. People always think keto means tons of dairy, hormone fed beef, and no vegetables, largely because theyve been reading hit pieces by Mayo clinic and food industry experts who are paid to scare people away from healthy diets and eating plans. Keto is not Atkins.

Also, vegans are way too strict in their food choices, which accounts for why they often have vitamin deficiencies, heart problems, etc. Humans should eat vegetables–lots of vegetables–but fat, cholesterol, and some protein provide the material for cellular rebuilding; to eschew these foods is a fundamental mistake, and accounts for the development of many auto-immune diseases we see in vegans.

Also, it really depends on the individuals heredity: some people may be more suited to a vegan diet, particularly if their ancestors were from southern climates. Northerners, though, who relied heavily on livestock, fasting, etc. for survival may not be adapted to a wholly vegan lifestyle, with its potentially larger number of carbohydrates, oxylates, etc.

I was probably insulin resistant as my appetite was insatiable, and all these diets help. This diet I created for myself is very long term sustaining also. I primarily only stay away from bread, rice, and things that are sure to be high on the glycemic index and make around 80% of the food I eat from scratch. Even elements of Mediterranean are included outside of couscous and other high carbohydrate foods. Ive felt better than ever, much better than Ive ever been on a Flexitarian.

I think its crazy that people on ketogenic will eat ketogenic cakes and all this processed meat and other no sugar sweet processed snacks but turn down fresh fruit which can give them nutrients instead of empty calories.

As a diabetic, I found this so disturbing. They are not informed (no surprise). Most dieticians are clueless regarding carbs and the dangers of gluten and still recommend whole wheat pastas and bread. Keto is not a no vegetable diet. Following the American Diabetic Association’s diet, my fasting blood sugar remained above 210, sometimes even higher. With keto, I lost 53 pounds and dropped my blood sugar to around 105 without insulin.

Why does fat and protein have to be the alternative fuel. Bread and pasta arent natural sources of energy, they just taste great. How did we survive in the winters when there were no carbs to harvest? The fats and protein help control my hunger. Carbs I find are less effective at doing this. This is why many people lose so much weight and keep it off when they control their carb intake. Carbs are not going to kill you, its how much of them you consume. I find I am always hungry when I have my carb days and I feel bad at the end of the day.
There is no one diet for every person. See what works for you and stick to that. See what gives you the best results.

After two years on a Keto diet, I can honestly say that it has worked wonderfully for me. As a type 2 diabetic, I went from high metformin doses to insulin and all the other meds needed, pills for cholesterol, pills for high blood pressure, and the obvious loose weight and exercise more recommendations. Within three months I was not needing any of those prescriptions. I lost 43 pounds in a month and a half, never experience cravings of any type, and it is a diet so easy to sustain that I cant believe it happened to me. especially because I tried the Atkins diet and the Mayo clinic diet before, my dietician recommended them, only to allow diabetes to continue to ravage my body. Something is definitely wrong with this expert. Sugar is not our friend. Carbs = Sugar. And Yes, much-needed carbs are present in The Keto diet, albeit in a more healthy, and sustainable form.

This seems disingenuous in some ways, I am in Keto, I eat Salmon, leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, lean proteins, nuts, chia/flax, spinach, zucchini, olive oil, avocado oil, artichoke, strawberries, blueberries, eggs, tuna….. MACROS 75%-fat 20%-protein 5%-Carbs Also I have lost over 50 lbs. My blood test have shown giant improvements in liver health, cholesterol, blood sugar. My blood pressure is now around 115/68 used to be around 140/98

Ive also lost weight using Dr Dean Ornishs low fat diet (<10% of calories) and also felt great and lost weight. Seems like a placebo effect could be in play. Any diet that cause people to become conscious about eating probably helps a significant proportion of the population lose weight. I can see Keto works but at what possible long term costs? Why this and not that?

Wow. These three ladies are so far behind on the this keto diet. There is tons of research out the now. Lots of data. Look up Dr Ken Berry. DrJason Fung, Dr Stephen Phinny. Dr Eric Westman. I was at the mayo clinic two years ago and they were pushing this American standard diet on me. They had me go watch a video and I couldn’t believe all the bad information they’re pushing. They need to get up to speed especially their nutritionist and these women doctors on the left. Do your research people these people that are speaking now are giving you false information. I went on the keto diet and my health improved 100%. My numbers were stellar and my husbands were too. Cleveland Clinic is on board with Keto. Don’t listen to these uninformed people. Sugar is poison and it’s hidden in everything. Read your labels. Process oils are too

You can’t argue with RESULTS! I’m a 25 YR+ Mayo, MN patient with severe auto-immune disease, (i.e.: UC, Colon Cancer, Crohns, PSC, RA, Ankylosing Spondylitis, 3 types of severe migraines, & several other AI diseases. Ive had 15 major surgeries & countless smaller surgs & treatments, since 1999, all at Mayo),. I have No colon & only 18 of small bowel left. I have a J-Pouch, (with 2 total reconstructions),. I was a strict seafood vegetarian for 10-11 YRs, since abt 2006. My illnesses only got worse & I became overweight, for the first time in my life. (Not typical for a J-poucher!) I was told it was due to my liver disease, PSC, & there was NOTHING I cud do to help it. My best friend is a chef & has always been very obese. She went on Keto & lost almost 100 lbs. Her girlfriend, also lost 80+ lbs. & I have several other friends that had the same results after going on Keto. I actually dont know anyone that has REALLY done it & not had amazing results. I was very sick, miserable & desperate, at this point & I decided to try Keto for 90 days. (80% healthy fats, 15% proteins & 5% carbs.), The change was almost immediate, & life-changing, in a VERY positive way!! I lost 30 lbs in 90 days & had more energy! My migraines, (which I was having 2-day migraines, abt 3-4 xs a month), basically stopped. I was getting out & doing active things, for the 1st time in YEARS!! My family was very much against me doing Keto, ESP with my serious health issues. Ketosis scared them. Ive been on Keto for almost 2yrs now & the benefits have been AMAZING!!! My family has completely changed their view of Keto & is very supportive now, due to the super positive health benefits & just my overall energy & happiness. Its the first time that I havent had an emergency surgery in this time frame! Its NOT an easy diet to start on, at all. I had the Keto flu for about 6 days. But, worth it! I will always recommend people to try it for just 90 days & see how they feel & go from there. Its NOT for everyone! But, it has changed my life in SO many positive ways, I cant imagine not ever trying it!! I was sick, tired, miserable & sad. Now, I am healthy, active & happy. I’ve also stopped taking 5 different meds that I was told I wud need for the rest of my life, with no consequences at all!! My bloodwork & all #s are the best they’ve been in 20+ yrs! My Dr. even asked me for tips on starting it because he cant believe the amazing positive change. Just saying- Worth a try if youre in the spot I was in.
(Sorry for the crazy long post. Just had to do the back story a bit. Lol!)

People, especially people from northern areas of America, Europe, and Asia have existed for thousands of years eating virtually nothing but fat, fatty meat, some organs, and water. Were talking people that were living very healthy active lives in harsh environments. You can still find pockets of these people today, but not like you could 120 years ago. Fortunately in the early 20th century there were at least a few doctors and academics willing to document, follow, and study the lives of these people. However, much of what was learned was dismissed because the information was so contrary to what was already being taught and invested in by government and business. One thing is for certain, we know very little and much of what we think we know will be obsolete in the future. Her saying there isnt much data is inaccurate. Like I said people have been eating this way for thousands of years and they were studied rather extensively.

I heard it all …the final word here is there are not long term studies. However, Apparently it works for a lot of people and she never mentions the biggest benefit for people who suffer from high blood sugar levels. The main reason I am doing the diet is high sugar. 30 to 50 gm of carbs and my sugar levels are normal, triglycerides normal, cholesterol normal, lost weight and all this in a 4 month period. Exercise etc. I understand her. She was taught this at school from the beginning and if talk to any nutritionist in any part of the world they will stay within their parameters.

As I understand, the keto diet is good for a short period of time. On the other hand, it would be hard to live a life without other nutrients found in carbohydrates. So the principle would be to find the equilibrium in our bodies (because all our bodies are different) where we consume and enjoy nutritious foods in a responsible way. I don’t think following a keto diet for all my life is realistic. But we must be careful on how to approach our individual nutritional needs. If you can go to a real specialist and follow a long term, balanced life style, do it!!

Well in the dark ages the so called experts thought the earth was flat. Mayo Clinic is clearly part of the nutritional dark ages of the present, where the so called experts are misinformed and believe the opposite of the truth regarding nutrition. Americans are eating fewer healthy fats and proteins than ever, and they have never been fatter. Meanwhile, those of us rejecting the dark ages wisdom of our doctors and instead choosing healthy keto diets have greatly improved our health.

Always suspicious of any food fad that catches traction and becomes popular at lightning speed.
This keto thing never appealed to me. Living off of bacon, butter and fat immediatly repulsed me. Hence my reacton- HELL to the NO.
But I decided to check into it and do my own research which also included seeking out the advice from several nutritionists. What I conclude is this:
    1) Keto is effective for short term weight loss goals.
    2) Keto sucks when it comes to trying to sustain it as a long term eating pattern and does terrible things to the body. No long term nutritional value over all. You starve your body from such nutrients thus the body eats any stored fat and then moves on to consuming muscle. My follow up conclusion? HELL to the NO NO NO.
    3) The Mediterranean meal plan is alot healthier for you and is easier to follow, allows more room for you to enjoy a wider variety of foods and when coupled with good old fashion exercise and a mobile active lifestyle, yields benefits both inside of you and out.
    4) I choose and have chosen the Mediterranean meal plan.
    5) This is just my opinion so dont freak out. Absolutley ridiculous for me to get into a knock down drag out arguing over food!

While its true your brain needs glucose, it does NOT need to get them from carbs. Your liver can breakdown fats & proteins into glucose, so there is absolutely no need to eat carbs. Ive been on the Keto diet for a week & the benefits were profound. Firstly, I noticed my weight dropping quite rapidly. Secondly, my energy levels were much better throughout the day which felt amazing as normally on a high carb diet I would be tired all day. Finally, and probably the best was motivation. I felt motivated to do things, whereas normally I wouldnt it was great. Of course, there are more benefits but these are the main ones I experienced. One of the downsides to the Keto diet is maintaining it, at least for me, I will be starting again tomorrow though.

Shame on you all. The Ketogenic Lifestyle and Nutritional Ketosis has been instrumental in metabolic diseases and disorders reversal. You all should have seriously researched this topic before speaking in this podcast. I used the Ketogenic Lifestyle to not only lose enough weight to reverse my Type 2 Diabetes (lowering my A1C from 9.1 to 5.0 inside of four months) but to combat the ravages of chemotherapy during standard treatment for AND to starve my late-stage metastatic tumors of the dietary glucose those cells require to kill me. Take it easy on this lady. This is what she has been taught, the scientific studies shes been exposed to have confirmed this, and this is what Mayo expects there employees to maintain. The words are coming out of her mouth but it really has nothing to do with her. The human body is very strange. Weve seen people greatly improve their health on the Mayo diet, weve seen people do it on Keto diet, vegetarian diets, and lets not forget the longest living humans on the planet are Okinawans who until recently ate mostly Asain sweet potatoes, rice, and only a couple small servings of fish or pork per week. Which would indicate a natural low fat low meat whole foods diet being most beneficial. However, this may not work for you.

The keto diet is really done in very strict ratios. Youre very cautious about weighting, measuring and being very precise with the amounts and types of foods. This was an argument against the Keto diet.
Here one can clearly see that they are not talking about serious obesity. They are talking about bikini diets. Those last 6 pounds that have to go so they can fit into their beachwear. Any severely obese person who goes on a diet does it in very strict ratios, cautiously weighing, measuring and being very precise with the amounts and types of foods. Otherwise, not even a pound is lost.
